Movement: the Best Medicine
We tend to think of movement as just exercise. It is more than that. Movement is life.
Every time you stand up from a chair, reach into a cabinet, carry groceries, climb a flight of stairs, or take a walk with a friend, you are practicing the skills that allow you to live with confidence and vitality. As we grow older, movement becomes even more important. It is one of the few things that positively affects nearly every system in the body.
Regular movement helps us:
Build and preserve muscle strength
Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls
Keep our joints mobile and flexible
Support heart health
Improve bone health
Enhance memory and brain function
Boost energy
Improve sleep
Lift our mood
Reduce stress and anxiety
Perhaps the greatest gift movement gives us is the ability to continue doing the things we love.
Motion Is Lotion
I often tell my classes that "motion is lotion." Our joints were designed to move. When we become sedentary, joints become stiff, muscles weaken, posture declines, and everyday tasks begin to feel more difficult. The wonderful news is that our bodies respond remarkably well when we begin moving again—even if we've been inactive for months or years. It's never too late to become stronger.
Consistency Beats Intensity
One of the biggest misconceptions about exercise is that we have to work out hard to see results. The truth is, consistency is far more important than intensity. A few minutes of purposeful movement every day is better than one exhausting workout followed by several days of inactivity.
Your body doesn't need you to be perfect. It simply needs you to keep showing up. Some days you'll feel energetic. Other days, your movement may be slower and gentler. Both count, and both are helpful.
Strength Is the Foundation
After the age of 30, we naturally begin losing muscle unless we intentionally work to maintain it. That loss accelerates as we age. Strength training is one of the best investments we can make in our future.
Strong muscles help us:
Rise from a chair with ease
Carry grandchildren
Climb stairs confidently
Protect our joints
Improve balance
Maintain healthy bones
Live independently for longer
Strength isn't about lifting heavy weights. It's about building the ability to live life well.
Every Movement Matters
You don't have to spend hours in the gym. Below are several examples of easy movements you can do that may seem small, but when done regularly, make a big difference.
Stand up and sit down several times.
Take a walk around the block.
Stretch while watching television.
Practice balance while brushing your teeth.
Lift light weights.
Practice deep breathing.
Dance in your kitchen.
Every movement counts. And every time you move, you are working towards a healthier future.
Move with Joy
Movement should not feel like punishment or painful. It should be a celebration of what your body can do today. Some days you'll move quickly. Other days you'll move gently. The important thing is to move, smile, breathe deeply, and enjoy the process. Your body is paying attention to how you respond to the movement.
My Invitation to You
Wherever you are today is exactly where you're supposed to be. Whether you're just beginning, returning after a break, or have exercised for years, today is the perfect day to move. Move alone at home or join one of our classes for guidance and community support. You don't have to be perfect. You simply need to begin.
Keep showing up. Keep getting stronger. Keep choosing health.
And above all…
Move. Smile. And Choose Joy.
